Monday, July 17, 2006 Summer Storm

2006-07-18 09:38:51

Tonight's storm rolled across Etobicoke like a runaway freight train. Sirens were audible across the area as emergency crews were rushing across the City to attend to calls for downed wires and trees. We ventured out about 11pm to see any damage that my have happened in the neighbourhood. I noticed several trees and limbs down in Sunnylea. One tree in particular was totally blocking Ballacaine Drive. I called it in to City Staff and Emergency Services, and fire crews arrived in about twenty minutes. They made sure no wires were affected and marked the area off with yellow tape. Works and Emergency Services staff will remove the blockage. Its sad to see so many large mature trees damaged or destroyed, but this after all natures way. One thing is clear to me at this time; until our new 3-1-1 24hr telephone service is implemented it will continue to be frustrating for residents to know 'how' or which number they should call to advise departments of problems or complaints.

Tuesday, July 25, 2006 City Council Meeting

2006-07-25 13:06:06

It's the first day of our July City Council meeting today. Things are moving along well and much of the routine business is being completed quite efficiently. Of course the hot topic at this meeting is the proposed pay hike for Council. The pay hike will be debated on Thursday morning. I can't believe that this issue is still alive since Howard Moscoe tried to slip it through in April. At that point a clear majority of Councillors voted for this unjustified pay increase, although some had a change of heart once it became public. I did not support the pay raise then, and I will not support it this week either. We cannot justify such an increase on the basis of our collective performance, the City's financial position, or the message it would send to City employees about their wage demands.
